Signs You're Dating a Credit Dud

The economy is tough. If you’re like most Americans, you’re hustling to hang on to that American dream:

  • You’re working hard to keep that income up,
  • You may even be working on a little side money,
  • You’re watching your credit score like a hawk, and
  • You’re probably even living the frugal life.

The last thing you need is to start dating a credit dud!

Some of those little annoying dating behaviors might just be the fastest way to spot a credit problem too.

On Time and Reliable

The biggest factor in building an excellent credit score is paying your bills on time, every time. This is a simple one to spot in your new beau.

  • Does your date show up on time? Maybe even a little early?
  • Do they reliably follow through on plans and promises?

Ditch the date who… Saunters in 15 minutes late and doesn’t even bother to apologize.

Organized and Attentive

Excellent credit scores (and relationships) are focused on building something good. That takes someone who is organized and attentive to details.

  • Does you date plan a fun and smooth evening?
  • Are they attentive to your likes and preferences?

Ditch the date who… Shows up with no ideas and can’t keep their eyes off of their iPhone.

Clearly Goal-Oriented

The best credit scores are built on good financial plans. I don’t know about you, but I want to be with someone who’s got potential. Someone who knows where they’re headed and has a pretty good idea of how they’re going to get there.

  • Does your date have a big goal or dream?
  • Are they actively pursuing it?

Ditch the date who… Is wishy-washy about where they are headed and whining about where they’re at.

Frugal, Not Cheap

Cheap folks are often stretching their finances – leading to bad credit. Frugal versus cheap is a subtle, but important distinction. Dating cheap-o is no fun. Cheap folks are often cutting corners to get what they want (selfish alert). In contrast, frugal folks are usually saving so they can buy based on value.

  • Does your date take you to a quality, moderately priced restaurant?
  • Do they order water to save a few bucks so you can have a dessert?

Ditch the date who… Forces you to share their appetizer as your meal and makes you sneak in stale popcorn to the movie theater.

Cash or Debit Card

Good credit requires that you use credit, but doesn’t mean you need credit. As you hang out together, it’s a good sign to see your date occasionally use cash or a debit card. It’ll give you a little assurance that their credit card is not the source of their “wealth.”

  • Does your date pay for small odds and ends with cash?
  • Do they use cash or their debit to get that cup of coffee?

Ditch the date who… Spends lavishly and excessively and never has a dollar to tip for good service.

Know Your Credit Cards

This is one of my secrets to spotting a good credit score: know the credit cards that require excellent credit scores versus the credit cards for bad credit scores.

  • Does your date whip out the Chase Freedom Visa, or
  • The Capital One Platinum Prestige, or
  • Citi Dividend World Mastercard?

Ditch the date who… Is carrying the Capital One Secured Mastercard.
