This is the last article in our 10-part series covering money-saving strategies at the nation’s largest retail grocers, including CVS, Kroger, Walgreens, Target, SafewayRite AidWalmartAlbertsons and Whole Foods. For our final post, we’re looking at Publix, the employee-owned supermarket based in Florida.

Publix has more than 1,000 retail locations in the South, promising customers a grocery store “Where Shopping is a Pleasure.” Here’s what you need to know about Publix before shopping (to ensure that promised pleasure):

Sales Cycle: Publix sales cycles run Tuesday through Wednesday, meaning that advertised sale prices change on Wednesday.

Rewards Program: Unlike many of its competitors, Publix does not have a rewards program or loyalty card. They do, however, participate in the uPromise program, which helps shoppers save for college with every purchase. You can sign up for this program online. One of the best reasons to shop at Publix is their plethora of store coupons. Check Publix’s monthly “Advantage Buy” Fliers, which include both manufacturer and store coupons, and can be found at the store’s entrance. Publix also produces Promotional Coupon Booklets, which are found throughout the store. And Publix has four different custom magazines, published throughout the year, that include savings coupons. Even better, you can request these magazines – Family StyleGreen Wise Market MagazineGrape Magazine, and Publix Pet Program – for free!

Coupon Policy:

  • Publix accepts the following types of coupons: Publix store coupons, manufacturer’s coupons and Internet printable coupons. Publix also accepts nearby competitor coupons identified by each Publix store. In addition, they will accept coupons from competing pharmacies for prescriptions only.
  • Publix does NOT accept percent-off-items or percent-off-total-order coupons.
  • Publix allows you to stack one manufacturer’s coupon AND one store coupon per item.
  • For promotional “Buy One, Get One Free” (BOGO) sales – where the sale is at the store instead of a coupon – you may use two manufacturer’s coupons towards the purchase or another manufacturer’s BOGO coupon, resulting in tw0 free items. You can also use a store coupon if there is one available.
  • Dollars-off-total-order coupons will be limited to one Publix and one competitor coupon per order.
  • Publix will automatically double any manufacturer’s coupon that is $0.50 or less (except in Florida).

Extras:  Publix has a “Penny” program, where a different mystery item is advertised in the weekly ad on Thursdays. To claim the item, visit any store (except those in Florida) on Thursday with the penny item coupon from the ad and spend a minimum of $10 (excluding alcohol, money orders, postage stamps, gift cards and prescriptions).
