5 Ways to Shop Smarter & Improve Your Wardrobe

Save Money by Shopping Smarter

How many times have you looked into your closet and wanted to scream, “I have nothing to wear!” Sometimes, it seems like no matter how much money we spend on clothes, our wardrobe still falls short. But with these five simple tips, you’ll learn how to streamline your shopping habits, save money and finally build the wardrobe of your dreams:

Never buy anything you don’t absolutely love. Whatever you buy needs to make you seriously happy every time you look at it. See a sale tag and feel compelled to purchase that skirt even though it’s really not your style? Stop that! Stop buying clothes that you feel lukewarm about and watch how much more you’ll enjoy picking out your outfits in the morning.

Never buy anything that doesn’t fit your current body perfectly. Stop buying clothing that are too big or too small because that’s the only size the store has left or because you think you’ll finally lose the weight. Shop for who you are now, not for who you think you’ll be in six months. Clothes can always be altered later, but if you don’t buy clothes that fit your current body type, you’ll have nothing to wear today.

Only buy something if it satisfies a need in your closet. If you already have four pairs of black pants, you don’t need to buy another (even if they are on sale). Buy items that fill a hole in your wardrobe, clothing that satisfies a need. Extra tip: color coordinate your closet by category so you can see what you have. Then, make a list of items your wardrobe is missing and shop only from that list.

Only buy something that will go with at least four other pieces in your wardrobe. So many of us are guilty of purchasing a great top that can only be worn one way.  This is a huge money-waster! Make sure that every new item you buy can create four totally different looks. Mixing and matching is one of the best ways to maximize your wardrobe; have fun with it!

Only buy items that fit within your budget planner. Have a set amount of money in mind when you go shopping and don’t spend more than you have. Take a look of your expenses every month and determine how much you can dedicate to clothing, shoes and accessories. And be extremely wary when it comes to spending more than $25 on a trendy item. More likely than not, that “hot” bubble skirt won’t be in style for long and you don’t want to be out 100 bucks for something you only wore twice.

With a little bit of planning and a few rules to shop by, your wardrobe will not only make you feel good, but you can feel good too knowing that you stuck to your shopping budget.

Going out shopping with friends is also a bad idea as you can feel left out if they’re buying stuff and you’re not.
