To establish good reading habits, we offered our grandchildren, "a buck a book." For every book they read and reported, we gave them a dollar. When one of the younger ones protested he couldn't read yet, we gave him the opportunity to report about a book he had listened to at preschool. They were proud of the purchasing power their money gave them, and their reading skills have improved too.

One of the things we did with our kids was to have them put some of there allowance in savings. We had a mason jar that held home/kid saving money so they could see it grow. Everytime we gave them $10 allowance they had to put $1 in a savings jar and $1 in a family tax jar. That gave them $8 to spend.

We wanted our kids to realize that saving is important and taxes are part of life. Just because you earn one amount doesn't mean that is what you bring home

The savings jar would be used for bigger purchases-electronic,game systems, dvds, etc. Sometimes we would split the cost with our kids so they could experience money changing hands and ownership. When they got older we would shop between new and used items so they could see price differences.

We all contributed to the family tax jar and would do something fun at the end of the month/quarter-bowling or rent a movie.

To be frugal:
1. When it brakes, repair it.
2. Lotion in pump dispensers- cut it open there is a lot left.
3. What ever you have maintain it.
4. Don't let the water run while brushing your teeth.

There are many more opportunities, Make a game out of conserving!
