The Quizzle Story: Why Quicken Loans Built Quizzle and How It Got Its Name

March 17, 2008 By Todd Albery

graphic-quizzle-storyMany years ago, Dan Gilbert, owner of Quicken Loans (and now the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Fathead), had a vision to build a Web site that would manage people’s mortgages for them.

Gilbert said, “Most people spend so much time focusing on their assets like their stocks, bonds, cash, and 401(k), that managing their debt (especially the largest one: their mortgage), takes a far back seat.

“How does somebody keep track of and feel confident that they are in the best possible home loan at any given time, when there are so many moving parts that can change the answer to that question from one week to the next?” Gilbert asked. “The short answer is that it’s nearly impossible. Each individual’s personal situation demands custom solutions. So we built Quizzle.

“Quizzle takes the guesswork out of the nearly infinite possible solutions and recommendations in an ever-changing, complex financial world,” Gilbert said. “It’s unique and provides clarity to the most pressing decisions of people’s financial lives: their monthly obligations centered on the typically largest one: their home loan.”

But as we began to build this new online experience called Quizzle, we realized we were building a tool that had the potential to go well beyond mortgage. We were developing a new tool (unlike anything out there) that would help people better manage their LIVES. We were giving people access to vital information they should know about themselves – critical things like credit score, home value, budget, mortgage and rainy day fund – important things like KNOWING when you can comfortably retire and KNOWING if you’ll have enough for your kid’s college fund.

We chose the tagline, “Don’t Guess. Know.” to encourage people to stop guessing about the significant things in their lives, and instead, choose to KNOW the truth.

We believe that the future vision of Quizzle is currently being defined by YOU, the Quizzle community. Every day, new Quizzlers are suggesting ideas for new stuff that they would like to see in Quizzle. And we’re listening.

Do you want to see your driver’s record and when that 4-point speeding ticket falls off of it (you know, the one that’s driving your insurance rates up)? Do you want access to your medical records – the same ones your doctors and insurance companies see? Do you want to know the best place for YOU to live? Do you want to find the perfect job? Your ideas will drive the future vision of Quizzle – so please, keep ‘em coming!

Why “Quizzle?”

Quizzle‘s original name was Mortgage Manager, based on Gilbert’s idea of helping folks manage their mortgages. As the idea evolved, we debated the name NestWorth – “nest” being your home and “worth” representing the true worth of your home, money and life. But we decided that NestWorth wasn’t the right fit (a bit too stuffy) for our unique company culture. So finally we decided on a name that would place no limitations on wherever YOU, the Quizzle community, might want to take this tool. We chose a fanciful name for which the possibilities are endless. We chose Quizzle!

The true Quizzle story has not even begun to be written yet. Because ultimately, the Quizzle story will be written by YOU.

Happy Quizzling!
